Preparation is the backbone of every successful photography session. While spontaneity and intuition are vital in capturing authentic moments, careful planning ensures that creativity has a strong foundation. Over the years, I’ve developed a process that balances organization with flexibility, allowing me to focus on storytelling rather than logistics.

The first step in my preparation is understanding the subject and the story I want to tell. Whether it’s a portrait, a landscape, or a documentary session, I spend time researching and conceptualizing the mood and message. I think about the location, the time of day, and the emotions I want to evoke.

Next, I focus on the technical aspects. I check all my equipment meticulously—cameras, lenses, memory cards, batteries, and tripods. I ensure that everything is charged, formatted, and ready to go. Over time, I’ve realized that technical failures can derail a session and hinder creativity, so this preparation step is non-negotiable.

Scouting the location is another essential step. If possible, I visit the site beforehand to understand the lighting conditions, angles, and potential challenges. This allows me to visualize compositions, anticipate shadows or reflections, and identify spots where the subject will stand out.

Even when scouting isn’t possible, I study maps, online photos, and the surroundings to mentally prepare for the session. Knowing the environment reduces stress and gives me the freedom to focus on the creative aspects.
